RIFODEROThis technique offers the possibilty of making a reinforced base to the canvas or the paper for the presentation of works and giving the piece a stable support.
Generally the rifodero is used while restoring when the canvas has been damaged or worn by time and needs a new support. The paper, drarwing, painting are refoderati when the sheet is too big or too fragile and also to be able to mount it on a frame as any other painting.
ExecutionThe canvas made of hemp or unbleached linen having quite a lose weave such as gauze and after an initial washing is stretched making sure to keep the weave straight over a provisory working frame.
The glue
Wheat flour or rice cooked in water obtaining a thin paste can be used to which a moderate amount of islinglass or rabbit glue may be added; it is not advisable even if used A layer of glue is spread onto the stretched canvas, with a bruch, and on the back of the painting to rifoderare. When paper is involved it should first be slightly dampened and left to rest for several minutes. At this point the painting is put onto the canvas and protecting the face of the painting with a plastic sheet or greaseproof paper, the canvas is turned onto a perfectly smoothed and clean surface ![]()
